Archived: SCSU Football Takes Down Mustangs

The St. Cloud State Huskies football team continued its winning ways this weekend, defeating the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 24-6 at Husky Stadium. With the victory, the Huskies extended their winning streak to six games and improved their record to 6-1 overall, and 6-0 in NSIC play.

The Huskies got out to an early lead on a four yard touchdown pass from quarterback Phillip Klaphake, to wide receiver Fred Williams. The touchdown catch was Williams 11th of the season. On the Huskies next possession Klaphake made an unbelievable 33 yard touchdown run in which he made a nice cutback move at the 20 yard line to make a defender miss. Klaphake finished the game with twelve rushing attempts for 134 yards and a touchdown. He also threw for 320 yards on 24 completions and a touchdown. It was an outstanding performance by the redshirt freshman quarterback from Princeton, Minnesota.

The Huskies led 14-0 ten minutes into the game and never looked back. Southwest Minnesota State was driving deep into Huskies territory, when a mishandled handoff from the Mustangs quarterback Ryan Ratekin was picked up by defensive lineman Josh Popanda and returned 78 yards for a touchdown, to put the Huskies up 21-0 early in the second quarter. The Huskies defense took over from there and shut down the Mustangs offense to 332 total yards of offense, also causing four turnovers. The defense for the Huskies stifled the Mustangs all afternoon and made it difficult to do generate any points. The Mustangs scored their lone touchdown on an 80 yard screen pass with two and a half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Saint Cloud State will have a second straight home game next weekend when Minnesota Crookston comes to Husky stadium. It will be Homecoming for St. Cloud, and the Huskies will look to extend their winning streak to seven games.
