Archived: SCSU Women’s Hockey Falls In Opener

The St. Cloud State women’s hockey team played well in their season opener, but ultimately lost to the Syracuse Orange by a score of 2-1 Friday night at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis. Haylea Schmid scored the lone goal for the Huskies in the second period.

Syracuse scored the game’s first goal with 3:03 remaining in the opening period, courtesy of Sadie St. Germain.  The second Syracuse goal was scored by Lisa Mullan after she swatted a deflected puck out of the air and poked it past SCSU goaltender Tayler Van Denakker (0-1-0) with only one minute left in the first period.

The Huskies outshot Syracuse 16-7 in the second period and finally broke through with about three minutes left when Haylea Schmid beat Orange goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater (1-0-0) to cut the Syracuse lead in half.

SCSU again outshot the Orange in the third period, this time by a 10-3 margin, but they were unable to tally a tying goal. Drinkwater would end the game with 32 saves.

St. Cloud State is back in action on Saturday at 4:00 pm against Union College. You can hear all the action on our new KVSC Sports Stream here.
