St. Cloud Police Crack Down on New Hands Free Law

St. Cloud Police spent a good portion of Wednesday afternoon conducting a focused enforcement to address the news Hands Free Minnesota legislation.

The Police Department says that from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. used unmarked squad cars to observe violations and then relayed the information to marked squads to perform traffic stops. A total of 23 traffic stops were made resulting in 6 citations and 17 warnings for violation of the new Hands Free law.

The Police Department will continue to conduct focused enforcement of the new law. Drivers are reminded that this law applies at all times, including when they are stopped at a red light.

The new law allows drivers to still use their cell phone to make calls, text, listen to music, and get directions, but only by voice command or single touch activation. You may not hold your phone in your hand at any time, except for when trying to obtain emergency assistance.
