Archived: St. Cloud Seeks Grant for Regional Human Rights Office

The city of St. Cloud will ask for grant money to help start up a human rights office in central Minnesota. This, in the wake of public outcry after a Waite Park man posted anti-Muslim cartoons in various places around St. Cloud.

At Monday’s city council meeting, the council approved a measure to request $70,000 from the Community Development Block Grant fund to go toward a regional human rights office, which would cost $110,000. Each city which chooses to participate in the program would pay a portion of the additional $40,000 based on population. Last night, the city of Waite Park voted not to help pay for the proposed Human Rights office. The St. Joseph city council is expected to discuss the matter later this month.
