St. Cloud State University’s Public Safety warns students about uptick in bicycle thefts

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Bike and E-bike thefts have increased on the St. Cloud State University campus.

In an email that Public Safety sent to SCSU students and staff on Thursday, October 22, they state that most stolen bikes were left either unlocked or only secured with simple cable-style locks.

The cable-style locks can provide less protection against theft than a high-quality, case-hardened U-lock or heavy-duty chain, the department says.

Public Safety urges students and members of the campus community to use the higher-quality lock and lock the bike frame and a wheel to a designated bike rack on campus whenever possible.

They also recommend students secure their bikes in well-lit, visible, and highly traveled areas, never leave their bike unlocked, record their bike’s serial number and keep photographs for identification, and promptly report suspicious activity or thefts to Public Safety.
