Starting Things Up Again in 2017

Students are returning to SCSU and days are getting busier/colder ’round here. Luckily we have fresh new releases to keep us sane!

 What’s New this Week?

The Flaming Lips – Oczy Mlody:

This is The Flaming Lips’ first proper full-length release since 2013’s "The Terror". On this album they continue their electronic experimentation and consciously pull back sonic elements creating a fairly sparse but intricate sound. The name of the album comes from a Polish phrase meaning "Eyes of the Young" and is pronounced like "Oxy Muh-low-dee". It’s a huge journey that lyrically encapsulates a fantasy themed romp through space with visits from unicorns, faeries, wizards, and demon-eyed frogs. Oh also, Miley Cyrus contributes vocals to the closing song "We a Famly".

Maria Taylor – In the Next Life: This best friend of Orenda Fink and 1/2 of the dream pop duo Azure Ray has released her 6th solo full-length LP. Maria Taylor’s newest solo album has beautifully thought out instrumentation, vocal performances, and arrangements. The third song on this album "If Only" also features vocals from Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes). A great listen for people yearning for memorable melodies and soothing folky tunes in these rough winter times.

The Molochs – America’s Velvet Glory: 2nd album from this LA based band led by principal songwriter Lucas Fitzsimmons. Part of their mission on this album was to take familiar and time tested elements of rock music’s past and reincorporate those sounds into freshly reimagined compositions. Along with filtering in elements of classic rock they also pick up a wee bit of a twee sound. Cool listening experience for any soul, old or new, searching for some rock songs that pay a great honor to rock songs.
