Archived: Storms Cause Power Outages in St. Cloud

Central Minnesotans are still dealing with power outages due to the storm.  KVSC news talked with Xcel Energy Wednesday morning.  At one point Tuesday night 9,000 customers from Monticello through the St. Cloud area were without power. Xcel spokeswoman Mary Sandok says 2,600 customers are still without power Wednesday.  Sandok says the high winds are making it difficult for crews repair the damage and it could take up to two days to restore power, and today’s high winds could cause further outages.  29,000 customers lost power in the Twin Cities metro and Xcel is calling in crews from other areas to help repair the damaged lines.

Meanwhile, St. Cloud State University meteorology professor Bob Weisman says the high wind warning remains in effect until 7 p-m.  In St. Cloud, winds gusted to 58 miles per hour at St. Cloud Airport Tuesday.  Those winds will continue at speeds of 20-40 miles per hour with gusts of 50-60 miles per hour today with perhaps a chance for being a bit stronger.  Weisman adds crosswinds will be a problem on north-south roads and Highway 23 and there were reports of at least two cars blown off roads yesterday.  The winds will cause more downed branches, power outages, and even minor structural damage to houses.
