-The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team was defeated by the Miami Redhawks on Friday night.  Gavyn Thoreson scored two goals and Yan Showstak made 28 saves in the 4-5 overtime loss.

The Huskies have now dropped 4 games in a row and will look for redemption tomorrow night.

Miami gave the Huskies everything they had in the first period and Michael Quinn gave them a 1-0 lead with 11:43 left in the period.  Both teams then killed off penalties and the Redhawks took a 1-0 into the second period.  Ethan Hay added another goal early in the second period to extend Miami’s lead.  Shortly after, Barrett Hall stole the puck from a Redhawk and scored to get St. Cloud back within one.  With 6:38 to go in the second period, St. Cloud’s Grant Ahcan netted another goal to tie the game up at two goals a’piece.  Miami then added another goal from Kocha Delic and soon took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

Miami Defensemen Vladislav Lukashevich was called for a penalty early in the third period.  A scuffle between players on both teams resulted in offsetting penalties for both teams shortly after.  St. Cloud State was able to successfully survive Miami’s 5 on 3 powerplay.  Gavyn Thoreson then scored a short handed goal on the Miami powerplay to tie the game up.  David Deputy then gave Miami the lead once again and Casper Nassen tipped a goal in the net to extend their lead to 5-3.

Two offsetting unsportsmanlike conduct penalties followed the goal and resulted in four on four play.  St. Cloud Pulled their goaltended to get a five on four advantage and Tyson Gross scored.  The comeback attempt continued when the Huskies pulled their goalie for a five on 4 advantage again.  Gavyn Thoreson rifled a shot top shelf to tie things up and the game headed to overtime tied at five.  In the end, it was Matteo Giampa who scored the game winning goal for Miami to defeat St. Cloud State 6-5 in overtime.

Coaches Quote:  “ I just thought our continual pushpack was excellent tonight and it’s too bad we didn’t get rewarded for it.”

The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow night against the Redhawks at 5:00 p.m. CST. You can hear that game live on 88.1 FM KVSC with Carl Goenner on the call.
