Archived: Traffic Stop Leads to Police Chase, Arrests

A routine traffic in St. Cloud stop led to a police chase, crash, and ultimate arrest of two people. It happened just before 6:00 am Sunday morning at the intersection of highway 23 and 14th Avenue South. Police say they stopped a 17-year-old driver for failing to yield to a parked emergency vehicle. During the stop, officers learned that the driver, from Rockville, did not have a driver’s license. While officers were investigating, police say the driver started the car and took off, heading north on 14th Avenue. A short time later, police say, the suspect ran a stop sign and was hit by a car driven by a 55-year-old St. Cloud man. Both cars were disabled. That’s when, police say, the passenger in the suspect’s car got out and started running away.

After a brief pursuit, police arrested the passenger, 23-year-old Jayson Javier Perez Nazario of Cold Spring, for fleeing on foot and obstructing the legal process. The 17-year-old driver was arrested for fleeing officers, passing a parked emergency vehicle, driving without a license, and running a stop sign. Both the driver and passenger declined medical treatment for their minor injuries. The 55-year-old driver of the other car was not hurt.
