Archived: Two Men Facing Charges After Fleeing Deputies

Two men are in jail after Sheriff Officers discover alleged burglary tools and methamphetamine. A Benton County Sheriff Officer was on a routine patrol in the area of 5th Avenue Northeast and 35th Street Northeast in Sauk Rapids Township Saturday, when he seen two individuals at Aspen Storage around 3 a.m.

The officer attempted to speak with the men who then fled on foot. The officer was able to catch one suspect, identified as 37-year-old Robert Newport of St. Cloud. Officials found a backpack in the area of where Newport fled containing what they say are tools commonly used for burglaries. A canine deputy was able to track the second suspect who is identified as 51-year-old Tony Lukaswicz.

A sheriff investigation found suspected methamphetamine in Lukaswicz’s possession. Newport and Lukaswicz were taken to the Benton County Jail where they are currently facing charges of possession of burglary tools, possession of controlled substance and fleeing a peace officer on foot.
