Archived: UPDATE: Boy Dies After Fall from Parking Ramp

The 14-year-old boy who died Tuesday after falling off the parking ramp at the St. Cloud Hospital has been identified as St. Cloud Apollo student Steven Duncan Skaja.

5:00 P-M Tuesday, 14-year-old Steven Duncan-Skaja and his stepfather arrive at the hospital to visit a family member in the emergency room. What happened next is still unclear.

"It’s our understanding that the boy exited the vehicle in the parking ramp and fell 38 feet to the ground," said Jeanine Nistler, Director of Communications at the St. Cloud Hospital.

The barrier between the outside of the parking garage and open air is three and a half feet tall and meets code. St. Cloud Police say this fall was an accident. After the boy’s stepfather realized what had happened, Jeanine Nistler of the St. Cloud Hospital says he ran into the hospital and alerted security.

"Security responded immediately, went to assess the boy, actually was able to speak with him at that point. The boy was taken to our emergency trauma center where he was assesed and it was determined that he should undergo surgery and he unfortunately died during surgery because he had such massive internal injuries," said Nistler.

Nistler says the St. Cloud Hospital feels terrible for family and friends of the 14-year-old football player.

"We’re assessing whether there’s anything that could be done but our belief at this point is that the barrier was appropriate and perhaps this was just a very very unfortunate accident," said Nistler.

Steven Duncan Skaja’s obituary says he was energetic, smart, mischievous, a rule bender, and liked to push buttons. It says he loved to dance, and was a friend to everyone.
