Archived: UPDATE: Cause of Freight Train Derailments Under Investigation

Crews continue the cleanup Tuesday of a train derailment in Paynesville. Eight cars of an 85-car Canadian Pacific Railway train derailed Monday afternoon. Two of the cars ended-up in the North Fork Crow River.

Railroad spokesman Mike Lovecchio says crews worked through the night to remove the rail cars. He says the railroad expects to have all cars removed later Tuesday and the damaged tracks repaired by the end of the day Wednesday. Lovecchio says no one was injured and the environment was not damaged. He tells WJON the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

About a dozen Burlington Northern Santa Fe coal train cars also
derailed east of Aitkin Monday afternoon. The train was coming from Montana and headed to Superior, Wisconsin.
