Archived: UPDATE: Officer Opens Fire, Man in Critical Condition

A 25-year-old St. Cloud man is in critical condition after getting shot by a St. Cloud Police officer early Saturday morning. Police were called to an apartment near Cathedral High School just before 2:00 am. Police say 25-year-old Frank James Bammert, a resident of the apartment building, fired several shots inside his apartment and several more outside on the street. When police arrived, officers tried to call Bammert inside his apartment but they say he refused to speak with them. Police set up a perimeter around the complex and shortly after 4:00 am police say Bammert fired several rounds through his living room window striking several apartment buildings nearby.

Nine minutes later, the man fired several more shots and this time, an officer returned fire, wounding the man. That officer, Todd Weeres, is a 12 year veteran of the Waite Park Police Department and is a member of the St. Cloud Tactical Response Team. Police say Bammert was hit by three gunshots and is in critical condition. Officer Weeres was placed on mandatory administrative leave. Police say no one else was hurt in this incident.
