Archived: Waite Park Mail Processing Facility May Close
The Waite Park mail processing facility is on a list to possibly close down by the end of the year. The United States Postal Service made the announcement Thursday.
About 250 mail processing facilities were put on the list, including three others in Minnesota. Earlier this summer the post office listed about 3,600 post offices that may be shut down as well.
Chief Operating Officer of the USPS Megan Brennan says they need fewer facilities to process the mail. There is no final decision about which, if any, the post office will close. About 35,000 jobs would be lost if the post offices and processing centers close.
The Postal Service lost more than $8.5 billion last year and they’re trying to shore up $3 billion in savings with closures and delivery changes. The possible closures means a first class letter could take two to three days to be delivered, adding a day to the current process time.
