Archived: Waite Park Police Seeking Decision on Confiscated Guns

The City Council in Waite Park will consider whether to sell or destroy guns confiscated by police. There’s no state law on the issue, so it’s up to individual cities to decide what to do with the weapons.

Waite Park Police Chief Dave Bentrud is asking for direction from the council because they’ve collected about nine guns since he took over as chief three years ago. Local news station WJON reports the chief prefers to destroy the assault rifles and the illegal guns but he’s fine with selling the rifles to a federally-licensed firearms dealer. The council considers a recommendation at a meeting Monday evening.
