Archived: Women’s Hockey Drops Pair to OSU

The St. Cloud State Women’s hockey team’s season continued their tough rebuilding season with a pair of losses at home this weekend to Ohio State, dropping SCSU to 0-26-1.

FRIDAY- OSU 6, SCSU 1

The Huskies hung with Ohio State for two periods as they entered the second intermission down 3-0. OSU’s Natalie Spooner scored two of her three goals in the game in the final frame in leading the Buckeyes to victory. Despite the lopsided final score, the Huskies matched the Buckeyes with 32 shots on goal, and broke a scoring drought that had reached 298 minutes when Julia Gilbert scored her fourth goal of the season late in the third period to keep SCSU from being shut out.

SATURDAY- OSU 3, SCSU 2

Saturday’s game was a heart-breaker for SCSU fans, as the Huskies fell to the Buckeyes on a Ally Taar goal with less than a minute to play in the final period. SCSU fell behind 2-0 before Michelle Burke scored on a slap-shot from point blank range to cut the lead to a single goal in the second period. Julia Gilbert scored her second goal of the weekend on a nice feed from Sydney Burghardt to tie the game early in the third period, but Taar’s goal with just under a minute left earned the win for OSU by a final score of 3-2. Junior backup goaltender Tayler Van Denakker made 36 saves for St. Cloud in the loss Saturday and was named the game’s second star.

Next up for the Huskies is a pair of games at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis for a matchup with the rival Minnesota Golden Gophers. KVSC will have coverage of both games this weekend via our Sports Stream at KVSC.org.
