Archived: Women’s Hockey Swept by #1 Wisconsin on Thanksgiving Weekend

Thanksgiving Weekend was no time to relax for the St. Cloud State Women’s Hockey team who were given the tough task of traveling to Madison to take on the #1 Wisconsin Badgers. Looking for their first WCHA win, the Huskies fell short and were swept by Wisconsin, losing 5-0 Friday, and 6-1 Sunday from the Kohl Center.

Friday saw SCSU give up two goals in the first period but play the Badgers tough in the second frame. Heading into the third period, the score read 2-0 in favor of the Badgers. However, Wisconsin captain Hillary Knight took the game over and scored twice in the third period en route to the 5-0 win. Knight had 15 shots for the Badgers in the win, while as a team, St. Cloud registered only 19 shots on goal. SCSU senior goaltender Tayler VanDennaker made 36 saves in the loss.

After having Saturday off, the Huskies returned to the ice Sunday looking for the upset win, but a three goal first period for Wisconsin quickly put SCSU behind. St Cloud got on the board in period two when junior Alex Nelson blasted a slapshot past Alex Rigsby to cut the Badger lead to 3-1. Nelson’s goal was her second of the season and was assisted by Julia Gilbert and Kylie Lane. However Wisconsin added three more goals to secure the sweep.

The Huskies are now 1-13-2 on the season and 0-10-0 in the WCHA. St. Cloud travels to Duluth this weekend to take on the UMD Bulldogs. Puck drop is slated for 7:07 on Friday and Saturday. We’ll have updates on our Twitter page.
