Buckeyes Score 5 Unanswered, Sweep Huskies
By Noah Grant / Sports Reporter / St. Cloud, Minn.
-The St. Cloud State women’s hockey team fell 5-1 to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the
series finale from the Herb Brooks Center on Saturday. Despite scoring first, SCSU could not
maintain the momentum, as five different goal scorers lit the lamp for the Buckeyes.
In the first period, the Huskies would go to the power play after Kaia Malachino was
called for interference. After going 0 for 6 on the power play in game one, the Huskies were able
to generate a quality chance from the middle of the ice, and Sofianna Sundelin banged home
the rebound for her ninth of the season. Payton Holloway and Julianne Labbé earned the
assists on the goal, which came at 12:44 of the frame.
In the second, Ohio State would respond with a power play goal of their own, as Mira
Jungåker’s point shot snuck by Huskies goaltender Jojo Chobak to tie the game. Less than a
minute later, Kaia Malachino picked up her second of the year to give the Buckeyes the lead.
SCSU would challenge for goaltender interference, but the call on the ice stood and the
challenge was unsuccessful.
OSU would grab some insurance at the 2:33 mark, as Maxine Cimoroni buried a quick
pass from behind the goal line. Sloane Matthews and Brooke Disher assisted on the goal,
Cimoroni’s 7th of the year. The Buckeyes outshot the Huskies 25-6 in the second period,
dominating the possession and zone time.
In the third, Ohio State kept their foot on the gas, making it 4-1 at 14:43 on a tic-tac-toe
passing play that ended with Sloane Matthews earning her third point of the night and getting
the goal. Matthews was named the first star of the night.
Joy Dunne would tack on an empty netter with 1:35 to go to seal the victory, as the
Buckeyes improve to 19-3-0 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 7-14-1, currently seventh in
the WCHA standings.
Next up for the Huskies is a road trip up north, as they take on Minnesota-Duluth on
January 16th. Puck drop will be at 6pm from Amsoil Arena.
