Ahcan’s Two Help Huskies Down Redhawks

By Carl Goenner / Sports Director / @carl_goennerpxp / Oxford, OH.

-On Saturday, Nov 22 the St. Cloud State men’s hockey team vanquished the Miami Redhawks 4-2.  Grant Ahcan led the Huskies with 2 goals for three on the weekend while Tyson Gross had one goal and one assist.  With the goals, both Ahcan and Gross tallied goals in both games over the weekend.

The Huskies came out fast in the game and St. Cloud found the back of the net first.  Grant Ahcan was called for a penalty at the 10:56 mark of the first period but Miami’s Vladislav Lukashevich was called for one shortly after.  The Two teams played 4 on 4 until a goaltender interference infraction by Gavyn Thoreson gave Miami an advantage.

St. Cloud State killed off the four on three powerplay for Miami and Grant Ahcan then came out of the box.  Just as Ahcan exited the box, Jack Reiman passed him the puck at the blue line and Ahcan scored on a one person breakaway.

Later in the first period, two Redhawks were given penalties and St. Cloud State earned a five on three power-play.  The Huskies had one minute and one second of five on three play to end the period but couldn’t score.  They entered period two with a two man advantage again and as the powerplay expired, Barrett Hall scored to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Late in the second period, junior forward Tyson Gross found the back of the net on the powerplay to extend the lead once more.  Penalties on St. Cloud’s Barrett Hall and Cooper Wylie awarded Miami a five on three power-play.  Miami’s Matteo Giampa took advantage and netted a goal over the shoulder of Patriks Berzins to get the Redhawks on the board.

David Deputy later added another goal and the second period ended with a score of 3-2.  Miami’s comeback attempt was thwarted by St. Cloud State in the Third period and Grant Ahcan scored the empty net goal to cap off a 4-2 win for the Huskies.

Coaches Quote: “We made it harder than we needed to tonight with some dumb penalties at the wrong time, but I thought we really had to find a way to grind it out in the third and we did.”

St. Cloud State will head home to take on the North Dakota Fighting Hawks in St. Cloud on Dec 5, and 6.  Both of those games will be broadcast live on 88.1 FM KVSC with Carl Goenner on the call.
