Buckeyes Shutout Huskies in Second Half Opener
By Noah Grant / Sports Reporter / St. Cloud, Minn.
-The St. Cloud State women’s hockey team had their return to the Herb Brooks Center
spoiled by a dominant Ohio State Buckeye team on Friday night. Ohio State scored in every
period, and Hailey MacLeod made 23 saves in a 4-0 shutout victory.
The Buckeyes came out to a strong start in the first period, generating multiple grade A
scoring chances and forcing key saves from Huskies netminder Emilia Kyrkko. Ohio State would
get on the board at the 7:35 mark of the frame, as Hilda Svensson continued her impressive
freshman campaign with her 14th goal of the year. After a 3-on-1 for the Huskies, Svensson was
able to skate end to end and beat Kyrkko high to the glove side.
The Huskies began the second period on a 4-on-3 power play, but were unable to
convert. Across the course of the game, St. Cloud State went 0 for 6 on the power play,
although the bright spot was the penalty kill going a perfect 3 for 3.
In that period, the Buckeyes doubled their lead as Jordan Baxter’s long point shot made
its way through traffic and found the back of the net. It was Baxter’s third of the season, assisted
by Mira Jungåker and Kassidy Carmichael.
In the third, Sanni Vanhanen and Jordyn Petrie both found the back of the net to finish
off the 4-0 effort. Vanhanen was able to cycle out to the high slot and beat Kyrkko at 16:17, off
an assist from Maxine Cimoroni. Just under two minutes later, Jocelyn Amos pushed an
offensive zone faceoff forward, and Petrie was able to knock the puck home to round out the
scoring. Amos earned her 100th career assist on the play in just her 96th career game.
The Huskies will be back at it tomorrow as they hope to earn the split in the series. Puck
drop is scheduled for 2pm at the Herb Brooks Center and will be broadcast on the KVSC Sports
Stream.
