Click to view the official poster of Trivia Weekend 2012.ST. CLOUD, Minn. KVSC 88.1 FM will host its 33rd annual Trivia Weekend contest Feb. 10-12. This year’s contest is titled “33 1/3: Trivia Long Play.” Station Manager Jo McMullen-Boyer said, “The theme was selected because it not only reflects the 33rd anniversary of KVSC’s Trivia Weekend, but is a tip of the hat to KVSC and its love of vinyl records (which the station still plays on the air).” The 50-hour trivia contest begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and concludes at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12.

Each year, St. Cloud State University’s on-campus station hosts the 50-hour trivia marathon. Announcers pose questions to trivia teams listening to the station on the air and online. The event differs from the typical board game or bar trivia; it is more of an information treasure hunt, requiring teams to do more than look some answers up online. With many theme-based and general questions in pop culture, history, science and more, KVSC’s Trivia Weekend is a Central Minnesota staple.

Much of the fun of Trivia Weekend is found at the KVSC studios. Hundreds of phone bank volunteers, fueled by food donations from local businesses, answer an endless flood of calls. The volunteers; current students, community members and alumni, donate more than 2,300 hours to keep Trivia Weekend from spinning out of control.

The event culminates at 8 p.m. Feb. 12 with an awards ceremony at Ritsche Auditorium, located at St. Cloud State’s Stewart Hall, where the winninThe coveted Golden Urn of Trivia Weekend.g team is announced and awarded the coveted Minnesota Masters of Trivia Traveling Trophy. The golden urn (trophy) shows the name of each past year’s winning team. The awards ceremony also sees inductions into the trivia hall of fame, photo opportunities and other awards.

Following the awards ceremony, contestants and volunteers are invited to attend a post-trivia celebration at the Red Carpet Nightclub in downtown St. Cloud where the Shake a Hamster Band will perform.

Trivia Weekend is once again broadcasting throughout most of Minnesota and globally at kvsc.org. It can be heard on Minnesota stations in Austin (KMSK), Mankato (KMSU) and Thief River Falls (KSRQ).

Trivia Weekend began in 1980 as an event put on by KVSC and the SCSU Residence Hall Association as a way for students to cope with the long and frigid Minnesota winter. That year, a staff of 14 answered calls on four phone lines from 50 teams. Now, more than 30 years later, KVSC requires hundreds of volunteers to staff the 30 trivia hotlines and has around 70 participating teams.

KVSC 88.1 FM, the Voice of St. Cloud since 1967, offers listeners an alternative format without commercials. KVSC features a diverse variety of music as well as news coverage and community events. The staff of KVSC 88.1FM is comprised of students and community volunteers.
