Archived: Funding for SCSU’s National Hockey Center Raises Concerns

The plan to renovate St. Cloud State’s National Hockey Center has reached an obstacle. SCSU President Earl Potter says the Minnesota Attorney General introduced concerns the IRS may have about managing the project’s budget. Potter says legal experts are deciding whether there is too much private use in the project, considering it’s for a public facility. He says they’re working through the issue, and still hope to move ahead with the project by this summer. SCSU hired a marketing firm last year to sell the naming rights to the hockey center. That announcement was scheduled to come last October, but is still yet to happen. The university is also working to raise more than $24 million dollars through sponsorships and private donations. The state approved $6.5 million dollars in bonding money during the 2008 legislative session.
