The Untold Story of the 100 Year Old Liberty Derrick at Stearns County Quarry Park and Nature Preserve

Arts & Cultural Heritage Producer Jeff Carmack explores the very thing that makes St. Cloud the “Granite City” as he heads out at the Stearns County Quarry Park and Nature Preserve for a demonstration of the 100 year old Liberty Derrick. While the derrick is easily located and open to visitors of the park, it is a rare occasion when the exhibit comes alive.  So, on a pleasant summer day in September of 2016, retired quarryman Bob Ramler took us back in time to before even electricity as he operated the 85 foot tall contraption of wires, pulleys, and Douglas Fir timber to move a 2-ton granite block for a fascinated crowd of school children and other curious community members.

This program is funded in part by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Legacy Grant.
