Archived: UPDATE: Melrose Man Killed in Snowmobile Crash

A 47-year-old Melrose man is dead after rolling his snowmobile and crashing into a sign. It happened at around noon on Tuesday, just east of Melrose on the Wobegon Trail. The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office says John Spaeth was passing his friend on a snowmobile when he lost control of his sled, rolled, and collided with a trail crossing sign, wrecking his snowmobile. Officials say Spaeth was brought to the Melrose Hospital, and later, airlifted to the St. Cloud Hospital, where he died later that evening.
