Air Quality Alert Issued For Central Minnesota

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has issued an air quality alert for the southern two-thirds of Minnesota which include St. Cloud.

According to SCSU Meteorology Professor Bob Weisman, cool air trapped near the ground has allowed a build-up of particulates from Iowa and into Minnesota. This means that people with a history of breathing problems should limit their outdoor exposure today and people with sinus problems will tend to have headaches.

This weekend the St. Cloud area will see a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain. Precipitation tonight will begin around 9 p.m. with a tendency of just freezing rain to continue as the night goes on. The rain or freezing rain could be heavy enough to cause minor flooding, since the deep snow pack has clogged drainage pipes and some ditches.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch in affect for Central Minnesota starting tonight and lasting until early Sunday morning.
