A man became distracted by his phone, causing him to crash his car near Richmond Tuesday morning.

The Stearns County Sheriff's Office says they received a report of an accident just before 2:30 a.m. near the intersection of County Road 43 and 217th Street. Twenty- six-year-old Raymundo Villavieencio-Quijas of Richmond was driving on County Road 43 when he starting using his phone. He lost control of his car and went into a ditch, where his car rolled several times before coming to a stop.

Villavieencio-Quijas asked a nearby residence for help. He was taken to St. Cloud Hospital with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

Villavieencio-Quijas said he was wearing a seat belt and was driving 56 miles-per-hour at the time of the crash. He was issued a citation for driving after suspension, use of a telecommunication device while driving, and careless driving.
