Archived: January was the Coldest and Snowiest in Years

2011 was the snowiest January St. Cloud has seen in 12 years. The statistics from the St. Cloud Reformatory says there was 15 inches of snow in January, 5 inches more than the normal amount. January’s total snowfall ranks as the 18th highest snowfall in St. Cloud and the most since 1999. Like December, January seemed to be much colder than normal, but was really only a little colder. There was also above average liquid precipitation for January which, SCSU meteorology professor Bob Weisman says, was not good for the snow melt situation across Minnesota this spring. January 30 to February 4 was one of the coldest outbreaks of the last 60 years, with temperatures dropping to -30 during all six mornings of the streak, five of those six days stand as record cold lows for late January and early February.
