Archived: KVSC 88.1FM to Celebrate Homegrown Music

Oct. 19, 2009, St. Cloud, Minn. – KVSC 88.1FM is continuing its tradition of supporting local artists by presenting its annual Minnesota Music Day. On October 26, from 6 a.m. – midnight, KVSC is only broadcasting Minnesota music. This day is designed to pay tribute to the many musicians originating from St. Cloud, the Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota.

All regular programming will be pre-empted to meet the day’s homegrown requirement.  At 10 p.m., Minneapolis-based acappella and experimental band Heatbox is performing live in the KVSC Performance Studio. Heatboxes’ music is described as James Brown meets Bobby McFerrin.

At 11 p.m., during its New Release of the Week feature, 88.1FM is airing the new album from Halloween, Alaska. The album “Champagne Downtown” is the third album from the Minneapolis-based four piece pop band.  The album is described as sublime electro-pop and features an all-star lineup of musicians.

KVSC has always had a strong appreciation for local music. Every Monday from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m., 88.1FM airs a show called The Area with venerable host John Drake, which exclusively plays Minnesota music. According to Station Manager Jo McMullen-Boyer, Minnesota Music Day is a one-day extension of that program. “Minnesota is enriched with talented musicians, and Minnesota Music Day allows these musicians important airplay,” McMullen-Boyer says. Everyone is encouraged to tune in to 88.1FM during October 26 and get a delectable taste of Minnesota music.

KVSC 88.1FM is St. Cloud’s only educational public radio station.  It is located in the basement of Steward Hall at St. Cloud State University. The station is operated primarily by volunteers and SCSU students and is a member of the Independent Public Radio – an AMPERS Network. More information about KVSC is available at www.kvsc.org.
