wffpostcard_front.jpgJune 24, 2010, St. Cloud, Minn.Expanding the Borders Your Radio – this is the theme for KVSC’s first international live broadcast in the radio station’s 43-year history. With support from the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, KVSC 88.1FM in St. Cloud, Minn. is providing live coverage of the Winnipeg Folk Festival at Bird’s Hill Provincial Park July 8-10. Listeners can tune-in to 88.1FM or stream live online at kvsc.org for the live broadcast on Thursday, July 8 from 5-7 p.m., Friday, July 9 from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday, July 10 from 9-noon.

wayne2sm.jpgKVSC radio producers Wayne Bergerson and Mike Chouinard are heading north of the border to explore North America’s premier outdoor music festival. A volunteer for more than 27 years, Wayne Bergerson, host of “Frets,” a folk and bluegrass show and has been attending the festival for more than a decade and is excited at the prospect of bringing the festival to Central Minnesota.

“This is a major project … it really shows how members support the station bringing in new technology,” said Bergerson. “It’s a challenge and something that I live for … it’s something to take seriously, but inside I’m jumping up and down like a 5-year-old.”

mike2sm.jpgMike Chouinard’s history with KVSC goes back 10 years and entails everything from programming and production to music and online services. Currently the host of “Diversions” on Wednesday nights, Chouinard is looking to provide listeners a true taste of what the Winnipeg Folk Festival is all about.

“I hope to provide a lively, captivating show from Winnipeg,” said Chouinard. “My goal is to bring the Winnipeg Folk Festival experience to our audience as real as we can with images, interviews and possibly a few songs from some of the artists.”

Now in its 37th year, the Winnipeg Folk Festival takes place each summer during the second weekend of July. The festival features music performances, a folk school, programs for young performers and young visual artists, over 100 artisans, children’s programming, a visual art exhibition and a food village that encourages the use of local, organic and fair trade ingredients.

KVSC 88.1FM, the Voice of St. Cloud since 1967, offers listeners an alternative format without commercials.
