KVSC Wins Awards in Statewide Competition

St. Cloud, Minn. – Students of KVSC 88.1FM won several first place awards from the 2009 Minnesota Associated Press Broadcasters Contest.  Overall, eight students from KVSC are taking home Associated Press awards on April 16 at the awards ceremony at the Midwest Journalism Conference in Bloomington, Minn.

Students won in six news and sports categories for 2009 including “Best Web Site” – a first for KVSC.  The KVSC Sports Team swept the category of “Sports Reporting” and a "Best in Show" from Caitlin Hogan – adding special significants to the honors.

"This is very exciting for the KVSC Sports Team," said KVSC Sports Director Matt Bishop.  "A lot of people put in a lot of hard work for these awards and it’s great to see that work get recognized."

Additionally, the KVSC News Team have won two awards in the 2009 Society of Professional JournalistsMark of Excellence Awards for Region 6.  The two broadcasts for these awards include "Holiday Lights Spectacular" by KVSC Assistant News Director Zack Fisch in the Feature story category and "Puppy Mill Investigation" by KVSC Assistant News Director David Iverson in the in-depth reporting category. 

For the KVSC News Department, the awards mark an exciting recognition for student journalists who apply academic knowledge in a real world setting.

"I have always known we have a very talented group of storytellers," said KVSC News Director Chris Duffy.  So getting recognized at the regional level is an absolute thrill."

KVSC is a student-run educational and community radio station on the campus of St. Cloud State University. Student journalists compete against broadcasters throughout Minnesota (both commercial and non-commercial) in the radio class-one category. The category is designed for stations with one or zero full-time newsroom employees. KVSC broadcasts eight weekday newscasts and more than 60 SCSU sporting events throughout the academic year.

KVSC 88.1FM, the Voice of St. Cloud since 1967, offers listeners an alternative format without commercials. KVSC features a diverse variety of music as well as news coverage and community events. KVSC 88.1 FM is staffed by students and community volunteers.
