Archived: The Students Have Spoken: Athletic Referendum Passes

Students at St. Cloud State support the long-term feasibility of Husky sports. In this week’s fall student election, students said “yes” to both referendum questions, supporting an athletic fee increase that will sustain athletics at St. Cloud State for the next decade. As a result of this vote, the student athletic fee at St. Cloud State will increase by $1.74 per credit. The first question, which asked if students were willing to increase fees by .74 cents per credit, passed 68% to 31%. The second question, which asked if students were willing to increase fees by an additional $1 per credit, passed 58% to 41%. Last week, SCSU President Earl Potter told KVSC what would happen if students vote “yes” on both referendum questions.

"If the students were to vote $1.74, about $21 a semester, that would really secure our position for the decade and allow us to invest as we need to in our athletic programs," said Potter.

More than 4,000 students voted in this election. With nearly 20% of the student body casting their votes, it’s a record turnout for a student election at St. Cloud State.
