The St. Cloud State football team is hard at work getting ready for their opening game on September 4 at Augustana, but a great deal of uncertainly surrounds the program. This less than a week after it was announced St. Cloud State University is considering cutting the football program due to budget concerns.

Three proposals to help St. Cloud State eliminate a $500,000 budget shortfall for the 2011 school year were discussed and two of them involved the cutting of the football team. Football, like all SCSU sports besides Men’s Hockey, loses money and Athletic Director Dr. Morris Kurtz was quoted as saying, “Everything is on the table.”

The Huskies play in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, which requires charter members to have a football team. St. Cloud State has requested for a waiver of this requirement as they look into the potential of cutting the football program.

The third proposal put forth would not eliminate football, but instead cut eight other SCSU sports.
