KVSC announces winners for 47th annual trivia competition; “Wild West Trivia”

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Over 200 volunteers, players, and workers filled Ritsche Auditorium with anticipation on Sunday, February 15, when KVSC announced the winners of its 47th annual trivia contest.

Stefan’s Dream 27: The Magnificent Stefan took home the trophy for the overall win of this year’s “Wild West Trivia: The Good, The Bad, and the Obscure.”

This is Stefan’s Dream’s eighth consecutive win, and the 29th year they’ve participated in the contest. The team scored 13,630 points, surpassing the second-place winner, Meyer Pants on Fire, by 555 points.

“Just a reminder that joy is resistance. When we live in joy, we’re resisting. The power of community is so strong … I’m so proud of Minnesota, I’m so proud of us for taking time to be joyful,” said Alison Feigh, a member of Stefan’s Dream team.

Winners for Division I and II include:

  • Voodoo Panties was the winning team for Division II, taking sixth place overall with 11,435 points.
  • The Hateful 8 Years of Triva was the winning team for Division III, taking 29th place overall with 6,395 points.

Fifty-six teams registered for this year’s contest, including eight student teams and 48 community teams. “A handful of those teams didn’t participate much, but most teams got in at least a few points over the weekend,” said KVSC Station Manager Dan Seeger.

Those who want to see the full list of rankings can visit the KVSC website.

KVSC also announced the 2026 Marty Sundvall Trivia Hall of Fame inductees, including:

  • Cheez was named the winner of the Jo McMullen Volunteer Award. He has been a phonebank volunteer for about 20 years and answered 815 calls this year. Seeger said Cheez is someone who asks him for a stack of posters and asks businesses to display the posters every year. Cheez attended SCSU in the mid-2000s, working as a KVSC DJ.
  • China Star Buffet, located in Waite Park, has been named as the trivia sponsor inductee for the food they’ve provided KVSC workers and volunteers with food for many years. “They’re just always a ‘yes,’” Dan Seeger said, despite having staffing issues this year because of Operation Metro Surge in Minnesota.
  • Porcupine Petting Zoo was inducted as the trivia team for 2026. They’ve been playing since the late 1990s. They started as a group of music majors at SCSU. “They’re a really great, enthusiastic team, and they’ve proven themselves to be really devoted to this contest,” said Seeger.

The Goat Posse inducted a new member during the awards ceremony. Winston Johnson, AKA“Maestro,” is joining the team of alumni who annually volunteer and produce segments for trivia weekend.

The competition took place over a span of 50 hours, kicking off on Friday, February 13, 2026, and finishing on Sunday night.

Trivia Weekend next year will take place February 5-7. The announcement for the 2027 trivia theme will be announced sometime in September 2026, according to Seeger.

Dietz: possible tuition increase, student housing, and reflection

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — As Interim President Larry Dietz prepares for his departure, tuition costs, campus redevelopment, and student housing were topics of conversation during KVSC’s Presidential Update Live on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Dietz announced his early departure in July due to family health concerns. His term will end with the conclusion of the fall 2025 semester.

Tuition Costs

Students could see another tuition increase next fall, according to Dietz.

In June, SCSU was approved for a 6.5% tuition increase, which has been used for operational costs, faculty and staff salaries, program improvement, and maintenance costs, Dietz said.

“This is a really base kind of an increase, but it’s helped. There’s no question that it’s helped,” Dietz said.

Dietz said next year’s tuition increase would mirror the rate of inflation. He added that it’s “just to keep even, that doesn’t include any extra money for technology or anything of that nature.”

He said that he doesn’t know the exact amount of the tuition increase for next fall, but he hopes the decision will be made earlier than June 2026.

Campus Redevelopment

As part of St. Cloud State University’s Comprehensive Facilities Plan, the Performing Arts Center (PAC) was closed down at the end of the Fall 2025 semester, with the plan to eventually tear down the building, along with other old buildings on campus.

“I began talking about demolition of buildings because, A, we don’t need them. B, we’re having to still spend some money on them, and that’s money that could be spent on something else,” Dietz said.

The university made a $25 million placeholder in the budget to cover the cost of teardowns. According to Dietz,  that funding didn’t come through last year, but the university made a list of buildings that would be demolished and decided which buildings were a priority.

The PAC is at the top of the list, and Dietz said the university is “crane ready” and just waiting for funding. He hopes that when the next budget is planned, there will be some money to start demolitions

Student Housing

With winter break right around the corner for SCSU students, some are making plans to stay on campus, but there’s a new change to winter housing this semester. According to Dietz, students will now have to pay $100 to stay at the dorms during break.

In the past, winter housing was free to students living in the dorms. St. Cloud State University is the last institution among MnState public universities to charge students staying over break, Dietz said.

The fee will “cover costs and provide a roster of who is staying in the residence halls,” Dietz said.

But the added fee for winter housing isn’t the only housing change. The location of summer housing will be in Lawrence Hall this summer, Dietz said.

Previously, students staying on campus over the summer stayed in Stearns Hall for the cost of $80 a week.

“We’ve done some work in Lawrence Hall, and I think it will accommodate a few more folks the way we have addressed some of that,” Dietz said. Previously, there were 50 rooms available to students in Lawrence Hall, though Dietz didn’t say what the exact number of rooms added was.

Dietz said he “didn’t have a dollar amount” for the cost of summer housing for the upcoming summer semester.

Dietz’s Departure

As Dietz finishes his time here at SCSU, he said, looking back, he wouldn’t do anything differently.

“I’ve tried to be transparent. I’ve tried to be forthright. I’ve tried to listen to people but also to meet the expectations that were set out, not only for me as the interim president, but also for the campus, relative to some financial expectations and others,” he said.

He added that his favorite part of campus was how nice and respectful the people were. “There are a lot of meanings of that ‘Minnesota nice’ word for me, I’ll just take it on face value. People have been very nice. It doesn’t mean that we haven’t had differences of opinion at times, but it’s been respectful.”

After Dietz announced his early departure, the university immediately began the search for the next president. That search is now coming to an end.

On Thursday, Oct. 30, SCSU announced four finalists for the next university president. The finalists include Lisa Foss, Rodney Hanley, Matt Cecil, and Gregory Tomso.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, Chancellor Olson will make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees for the appointment of the president, Dietz said.

Local food shelves anticipate an influx of people with the loss of SNAP and MFIP benefits in November

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The government shutdown has reached record length, and local food shelves are preparing for an influx of people.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) benefits will not be distributed in November due to the government shutdown, according to Spenser Bickett, the media relations specialist for the Minnesota Department of Children Youth and Families (DCYF).

According to Bickett, 440,000 Minnesotans accessing SNAP or MFIP will lose their grocery benefits until the shutdown ends or the federal government gives out further guidance. However, the cash portion of MFIP will be issued.

The Women Infants and Children program (WIC) has not been affected yet, but that could change as the shutdown continues, said DCYF commissioner Tikki Brown.

During a media briefing on Friday, Oct. 24, with speakers from DCYF, the Hennepin County Board, and Second Harvest Heartland, they discussed how the loss of SNAP and MFIP benefits will affect central Minnesotans.

“There will likely be more and more families going hungry,” said Irene Fernando, Hennepin County Board commissioner and board chair. “These are our neighbors, our kids’ classmates and friends, working families.”

Because of this, local food shelves are anticipating an increase in people while the shutdown continues. At Catholic Charities of St. Cloud, Eric Vollen, the emergency services program manager, says the organization has already seen an increase in people coming in as they prepare for the loss of benefits.

“Food demand has been high all year, and this could push us to record levels even further,” Vollen said.

Vollen added that he anticipates a large increase in November. To ensure Catholic Charities of St. Cloud can help as many people as possible, Vollen said they’re looking at making adjustments. The non-profit organization might add more appointments, extend hours, and possibly limit the quantities of food that a household can receive.

Another food shelf in St. Cloud is the Huskies Food Pantry at SCSU, which students which students who struggle with food insecurity can utilize. Rebecca Peine, the Interim Dean of Students who works with the food shelf, said she also anticipates an uptick in November.

Currently, the food pantry helps an average of 206 students a week in the food shelf, according to Peine.

“We want to help support as many students as possible, and I think right now we might be in a position where we’re going to see more students reaching out to help for help,” Peine told KVSC.

The best way to help struggling families during the shutdown is to donate to your local food shelf or food pantry, according to Bickett. To donate to the Catholic Charities of St. Cloud, visit their website

Those who want to donate to the Huskies Food Pantry can do so by dropping their donations off at the food shelf in the Miller Center at SCSU in room 135. They encourage donors to email them a list of what they’re bringing them beforehand so they can log the donation.

For more information on how to get help, visit the USDA Food and Nutrition Services website or call the hunger hotline at 1-866-348-6479.

KVSC Debuts New Program Schedule on September 29

Changes are coming to Your Sound Alternative. A new KVSC programming schedule debuts on Monday, September 29.

For nearly sixty years, KVSC has been dedicated to bringing locally produced, eclectic, and quality programming to your airwaves. As radio has changed, so have we. This has never been the result of necessity but, instead, a genuine desire to represent the communities we are part of, whether those be SCSU, St. Cloud, or Central Minnesota. As we develop, we encourage those conversations to continue.

Recent public media cuts have redefined the needs for community-based radio. The rescission of funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting earlier this year has put many radio stations in jeopardy of going silent. While KVSC hasn’t depended on CPB grants in years, many of the producers of our weekly syndicated shows we carry do.

After WPR announced earlier this year that they would be ending four of their syndicated programs (including To the Best of Our Knowledge, a longstanding part of the KVSC schedule), we started reevaluating how those shows serve our mission. While we love these programs and encourage you to continue supporting them by listening to the stations they continue to air on, they deprive local music lovers, news journalists, and sportscasters unique opportunities to speak directly to and for our Central Minnesota community, which has always been our primary mission. That is why KVSC stands for The Voice of St. Cloud.

So, sadly, we are letting go of a number of our syndicated programs. Public broadcasting cuts didn’t force our hand to make this decision — we could have picked up other syndicated content to fill these slots if we wanted to — but we chose to instead invest in home-produced programming because we believe radio is best when it is local in every sense of the term.

In the months and countless conversations since, we have a schedule that our staff and crew of volunteers see as the start of an exciting new chapter for KVSC. The changes include, amongst other things, expanding alternative programming into weekends, lengthening weekend shows, rebranding certain programs, increasing in-house news-feature productions, and creating new specialty programming.

The KVSC program schedule grid

We get it. That’s a lot to chew on. So, for your viewing convenience, make sure to refer to our 2025 Fall Program Lineup and Reference Guide to see exactly what is changing. You can download the guide at this link.

We will also be making numerous posts over the next week telling you in more detail about some of our new and evolving programs. And, to those who wish to catch some of your favorite weekend programming on KVSC one last time, make sure to tune in this weekend for a fond farewell.

Our main commitment remains to you, the listener. If you have questions, concerns, or want to share thoughts about our new schedule, don’t hesitate to reach out! We hope that you are anticipating these changes as much as we already do. Thank you for helping KVSC be Radio as Local as It Gets for nearly sixty years. We look forward to your continued listenership.

KVSC announces theme for 47th annual Trivia Weekend

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — KVSC’s annual trivia contest is back, and the theme has officially been announced.

This year’s theme is “Wild West Trivia: The Good, The Bad, and the Obscure.” The theme was announced during KVSC’s Trivia Theme Reveal Party on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Each year, a different theme is chosen on a particular phenomenon or pop culture reference, and approximately 25% of the questions are based on the theme.

Last year’s theme was “Trick or Trivia: A Hauntingly Good Time!” with Stefan’s Dream 26: Bloodbath and Beyond as the winners.

Another team, There’s Always Money in the Banana Stand, with Natalie Motl and Melanie Becken, who attended the reveal party, has competed in 12 Trivia Weekends.

“There’s just something really fun with how unique it is,” Motl told KVSC during the event.

Ranchers can register their teams starting Monday, Dec. 15, at KVSC.org/trivia. It costs $60 to register, and teams can have an unlimited number of members.

The competition kicks off at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 13, and ends at 7 p.m., Sunday, February 15.

Granite City Radio Theatre announces new producer and host

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Granite City Radio Theatre (GCRT) has announced its new producer and host for its show.

The previous host, Jay Terry, retired from the show following the 13th season in the spring of 2025. Now, Lee Adams, who has been involved with GCRT since the beginning of the show, is taking over.

“It’s big shoes to fill,” Adams said. “He’s a very funny man and … it’s going to be a little tough to step into that role.”

GCRT is a long-running radio show that airs live on KVSC and is performed in front of a live audience at the Pioneer Place on Fifth in downtown St. Cloud. The show features music performances, comedy sketches, old-time radio drama, and a trivia contest.

In previous years, GCRT would put on four shows a year. However, this year, there will only be three shows. Shows will be in October, March, and May, Adams said.

Adams has been involved with Granite City Radio Theatre since the beginning of the show as a member of Shades Brigade, a group that performs radio drama episodes on GCRT. Shades Brigade includes 30-minute episodes during the two-hour-long GCRT program.

Lee Adams performs with other members of Shades Brigade in this undated photo taken by Joseph Bigelow.

“It’s more than doing a show. It’s also tons of people that I have gotten to know,” Adams told KVSC during a phone call on Friday, Aug. 29.

Adams grew up in Boston, New York. He got into acting when he started at Boston Youth Theater, a professional theater company that worked with young people. He auditioned for a show, and that’s where his theater career started.

“I got cast, and I immediately fell in love with theater. I mean, it’s where all my energy went,” Adams said. “I might be incarcerated or dead if it wasn’t for theater.”

From there, Adams dropped out of high school. He worked construction during the day and did theater at night. Through the 1980s, he worked in a lot of media companies, did professional stand-up, and even wrote for other stand-ups and did an improv group.

In 1989, Adams opened a theater company in Minnesota called Mystery Cafe after his wife and her parents convinced him to.

Mystery Cafe is a murder mystery, comedy, and dinner theater company.

“I like [Minnesota]. People are kind, and for the most part, accepting. And you can be who you want to be here more than most places,” Adams said. “I think people are just cooler here.”

When Terry announced that he was stepping down from the role, several people who were involved in GCRT approached Adams about taking over. He then went through two interviews before KVSC’s Station Manager, Dan Seeger, offered him the job.

“I’ve been part of [GCRT] for a long time, so I think it makes the transition for everyone else a bit easier,” Adams said.

The 14th season, hosted by Adams, begins this fall, with the first episode on Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Lee Adams, the new host and producer for GCRT, performs during a GCRT show in this undated photo taken by Joseph Bigelow.

You can claim your shifts using our Trick-or-Trivia Phone Bank form on SignUpGenius. A SignUpGenius account is not required to sign up, but it is recommended because it makes it easier for you to double-check your shifts and make adjustments if your plans change.

The strength of KVSC’s contest is our volunteers who provide interactive fun for our teams who compete from Minnesota, the Midwest, and globally. We thank you by providing delicious food and drink donated by area restaurants and other sponsors.

2024 Features a Hybrid Approach for Trivia Phone Hotline Volunteers

We are offering both in-person volunteer opportunities in the phone bank on campus and remote hotline volunteering from the comfort of your home!

If you join us to volunteer on campus, you must be healthy; please change to a remote volunteer if you do not feel well before Trivia Weekend begins. Safety is our priority for everyone involved in-person.

PARKING LOCATIONS FOR VOLUNTEERS:

The parking policies at SCSU do not allow visitors to park for free in any campus lot. However, you can park for free in H-lot for Trivia Weekend only. Note that parking in any other lot might result in a parking ticket.

H-lot is located between Ruby Cora Webster Hall (formerly Building 51) and Riverview, just south of Stewart Hall. Enter campus by turning onto 8th Street off of 5th Avenue. Follow 8th Street all the way to the end, head up the slight hill at the end of 8th Street (heading east toward the Mississippi River) and you’ve found H-lot. Again, all other lots and spots will be ticketed—or you can pay as you go in timed pay lots or the 4th Avenue Ramp.

Feel free to call the office during regular business hours Monday-Friday at 320-308-3066 with any questions about volunteering.

Buy Your Trick-or-Trivia T-Shirt at the KVSC Store

When KVSC’s Trick-or-Trivia happens February 14-16, you want to be sure you’re adorned properly. Yes, the theme calls for costumes, but you’re also going to want a supply of splendidly spooky Trick-or-Trivia t-shirts.

A model posing in a mock-up of the Trick-or-Trivia t-shirt. The shirt comes in orange with black printing or black with orange printing. The front of the t-shirt has the KVSC badge emblem with silhouettes of bats flying next to it, the Trick-or-Trivia logo in a dripping-blood font, a silhouette of a cat arching its back, and the "A Hauntingly Good Time February 14-16, 2025" printed on it. The back of the shirt has a small Red Carpet Nightclub logo at the top and the eyes and mouth of a traditional jack o' lantern printed on it.

This year, the t-shirt comes in two different colors and has a design on both the front and back.

The t-shirt is available for online purchase at the KVSC Store. It is available in sizes from extra-small to 5X-Large. We are taking orders on the t-shirts until mid-January, and they will ship out in time for Trivia Weekend.

There is a shipping charge associated with the t-shirt purchase, but that charge remains fairly settled whether it’s one t-shirt or several, so we’re encouraging teams to do group orders.

In addition to the pre-order t-shirts, we will have an allotment available for sale at KVSC during Trivia Weekend if you want to see it before buying. Do note that we will have limited availability on sizes at that time.

In addition to purchasing the t-shirt, you can also register your Trivia team and pre-order the Trick-or-Trivia Question and Answer Book at the KVSC Store.

MNL on the Road Welcomes VIAL for a Free, All-Ages Show on November 25

The 34th season of Monday Night Live has already been fantastic, and it’s going to get a whole lot better with our first MNL on the Road. The Minneapolis indie-punk trio VIAL will make the trek to St. Cloud for a free, all-ages concert at the Pioneer Place on Monday, November 25.

VIAL plays wildly catchy songs with thrilling abandon, and they’ve been wowing crowds all year long as they’ve toured in support of their latest album, burnout.

The three members of the rock band VIAL

You might remember that VIAL was scheduled for a different MNL on the Road date earlier this year, but a March blizzard unfortunately forced a cancelation. Rescheduling was a given, and we’re thrilled they’ll be here for the first MNL on the Road of the season.

As always, MNL on the Road is a FREE, ALL AGES show. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the show starts at 9:00 p.m. sharp.

If you can’t make it out to Pioneer Place on November 25, you can enjoy Monday Night Live by tuning into KVSC-88.1FM, listening on our website, or watching on UTVS.

Need more encouragement? Check these tracks from their latest album:

MNL on the Road is made possible through support from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund.

In a new KVSC News Special Report, our Production Director Johnny takes a look at the multi-billion streaming industry, and why none of that money seems to go back to the artists.

How You Can Help Support Muggsy Lauer, Music Director of Granite City Radio Theatre

Granite City Radio Theatre completed its twelfth season with a notable absence on the stage.

Muggsy Lauer, Granite City Radio Theatre Music Director, was missing because of a medical emergency that resulted in him undergoing triple bypass surgery.

This is the first time Muggsy missed a Granite City Radio Theatre show.

Since the show’s inception, Muggsy has collaborated with a string of special musical guests on stage to properly showcase their art for audiences in the Pioneer Place on Fifth theater and those listening on KVSC-88.1FM.

Muggsy Lauer

As a St. Cloud State University and KVSC alum, Muggsy is a mainstay of Granite City Radio Theatre and the Central Minnesota music scene.

His other longtime professional endeavor as proprietor of Muggsy’s Beans, and his commitment to trading coffee for on-air underwriting spots, helps keep our staff contentedly caffeinated for their on-air shows.

As someone who makes his living as a gigging musician and small business owner, Muggsy doesn’t have health insurance to cover his significant medical expenses. Additionally, it will be months of recovery before he can play shows again, which cuts off his main source of income.

Muggsy’s sister set up a GoFundMe to help him with these expenses.

If you enjoy Granite City Radio Theatre or any of Muggsy’s creative work, please consider making a donation at this link.

KVSC packs up “in-tents” 45th Annual Trivia Contest by honoring Jo McMullen

By Maya Geving / News Reporter

Volunteers and participants filled Ritsche Auditorium with anticipation on Sunday night as an award ceremony revealed the winners of Trivia Weekend 2024. The 45th annual competition took place over the span of 50 hours and featured 47 trivia teams.

KVSC Operations Director Jim Gray hosted the ceremony alongside a panel of other Trivia contributors. He opened the ceremony by calling the competition “in-tents,” a play on words that revolved around the weekend’s Camp Trivia theme.

Of the 47 teams that participated, Stefan’s Dream 25: Aurora Stefanis returned as the champions to continue their dominance with a sixth consecutive title. (See final Camp Trivia team rankings here.)

But before the award segment began, Gray paid tribute to former KVSC Station Manager Jo McMullen who sadly passed away last year.

2024 marked the first Trivia Weekend without McMullen in 30 years.

“She left us in a good place,” Gray said. “We are able to pick up and carry on in her legacy.”

Part of carrying on in McMullen’s legacy includes the newly renamed Jo McMullen Trivia Volunteer Award, which went to St. Cloud State alum Patrick St. John.

Gray also introduced KVSC’s new Station Manager, Dan Seeger, who he says “approached the monumental task of filling McMullen’s impossibly large shoes with skill, grace and respect.”

Trivia Weekend 2025 will go down Feb. 14-16.

Details on the Trivia Theme Reveal Party in Aug. will be released at a later date.

Hundreds come together to celebrate Juneteenth in St. Cloud

By Shay Lelonek / News Director

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Hundreds of people in the community came together on Friday, June 19, for St. Cloud’s 30th annual Juneteenth event at Lake George Municipal Park.

For the first two years of the event, attendees took a shuttle to Minneapolis to attend the Juneteenth event in the Cities, said Robert Johnson, who is part of the African American Male Forum in St. Cloud. The forum is one of the original sponsors of Juneteenth in St. Cloud.

The event started at Riverside Park in St. Cloud, but over the years, the event has grown so much that they had to move locations to Lake George to fit more vendors, and attendees.

“People have changed, demographics have changed … more people are living in St. Cloud, more people are finding out about Juneteenth … so it is growing in numbers,” said Dr. Jarrod Hall, who is the founder of the event.

Now, the event features over 75 vendors, and several food trucks as well as plenty of other activities for attendees to enjoy. Live music and speakers took the main stage, and a group of people danced together throughout the day.

Juneteenth celebrates the day that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. The day was officially recognized as a U.S. federal holiday on June 17, 2021. However, the holiday started in 1865 to commemorate the enforcement Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas.
